Figure 1 Outline of the various treatments and conditions that were used by Mfopou et al4 that allowed for efficient differentiation of pancreatic cells from several human embryonic stem cell lines. Inhibition of the hepatic fate by removing exogenous FGF from early stages of the protocol and inhibition of bone morphogenetic protein signaling with noggin was necessary to allow for pancreatic fate conversion. Note that all agents target pathways that had been identified to be important in liver and pancreas formation by prior studies in developmental biology.
