1 WATER

2 You need: -something round (smallish) -green, purple & blue pencil crayons
Take out a piece of paper Draw 3 circles on your page Circle 1- 70% blue, 30% green Circle 2- 67% purple, 30% green, 3% blue Circle 3- 30% green, 59% blue, 11% purple

3 Hint: The 3rd graph is to do with water use
Can you guess what the slices of each pie represent? (remember we are talking about water) Hint: The 3rd graph is to do with water use

4 What’s all this mean? Circle 1- 70% blue (all water in the world), 30% green (all land in the world) Circle 2- 67% purple (salt water), 30% green (all land), 3% blue (all fresh water) Circle 3- 30% green (agriculture), 59% blue (industry) 11% purple (domestic) This graph is on water use in the world

5 Answer the following based on pages 26-27 in the Atlas
What % of the world’s fresh water is in the ground, glaciers/ice caps and available in rivers/lakes/swamps How is water a ‘renewable resource’? What is a watershed? What human factors may lead to contamination of fresh water? List 6 areas of the world that appear to have a lot of water List 4 areas of the world that appear to have a very limited water supply How does water use differ in high and low income countries?

6 Iceberg and Polar cap store most of the fresh water on Earth

7 Where exactly is all the water?
Reservoir Volume of water (106 km³) Percent of total Ocean 1370 97.25 Ice caps & glaciers 29 2.05 Groundwater 9.5 0.68 Lakes 0.125 0.01 Soil Moisture 0.065 0.005 Atmosphere 0.013 0.001 Streams & rivers 0.0017 0.0001 Biosphere 0.0006

9 It’s renewable but we’re running out…
On a global basis, fresh water is a increasingly scarce resource. Increasing population + change of consumption patterns + increased meat consumption + climate change + contamination = competition for water Read over these slides at your table and answer these questions: How are food choice and water related? How is water use affecting water availability? What climate factors are leading to the water crisis? Which human activities are having the greatest consequences? Rank them from 1-6. Which areas of the world are most affected? CAN YOU THINK OF A WORLD WIDE SOLUTION???

10 Water consumption for food production (II)

11 Competing water uses (I)
What conclusions can you draw from these graphs?

12 What conclusions can you draw from these graphs?

13 Climate Change & Water Increased droughts and floods
Depletion of aquifers Pollution and contamination by sewage, agricultural and industrial runoff China, India and South Africa and Middle East countries most at risk

14

15 Distribution of population and water resources

16 Which human activity is having the greatest impact? What can we change?

20 Water in China Half of China's 617 largest cities face water deficits.
China has 20% of the world’s population but only 7% of the world’s water Southern China has 36.5% of China’s landmass AND 80.9% of its water Northern China has 63.5% of China’s landmass AND 19.1% of its water (3:29) ‘Why China Is Running Out Of Water’

21 Is desalination of sea water the answer?
Requires large amount of energy and is thus costly Restricted to only economically well-off countries. (4:42) ‘Can Seawater Desalination Solve California’s Drought?’
