2 BIOGRAPHY OF GARRETT MORGAN
The son of former slaves, Garrett Morgan was born in Paris, Kentucky, on March 4, 1877. He was the seventh of 11 children.  Garrett Morgan married twice. First, he married Madge Nelson in 1896; they were divorced in 1898. Then, he married again in His second wife was Mary Hassek. Later, they had three sons.

3 BIOGRAPHY OF GARRETT MORGAN
Garrett Morgan was educated in elementary school only. His curiosity and innovation led to the development of many useful and helpful products. Among his inventions was an early traffic signal and a gas mask. The accomplished inventor died in Cleveland, Ohio, on August 27, 1963, one month before the anniversary reading of the Emancipation Proclamation, an event that he had been looking forward to.

4 DURING HIS LIFETIME Many of the world's most famous inventors only produced one major invention Garret Augustus Morgan created two: the gas mask and the traffic signal.

5 THE GAS MASK The gas mask was a popular invention but people didn’t want it because Garrett Morgan was black. Thanks to him many soldiers survived during both World Wars because of his effective gas mask.

6 THE TRAFFIC SIGNAL After witnessing a collision between an automobile and a horse- drawn carriage, Morgan was convinced that something should be done to improve traffic safety. Morgan was one of the first to apply for and acquire a U.S. patent for a traffic signal. The patent was granted on November 20, 1923.
