2. Introduction We celebrate Black History Month to recognize all the black people who worked to help people in our neighborhood, community, city, town, county, state…. EVEN WORLD!!! Garrett Morgan is one of those people. His inventions have helped people through the 19 th century, the 20 th century, and still helping people through this century! His inventions were great…. Now you’ll see the world through his eyes as a young inventor…!!!

3.  Left school at 14 with only a 5 th grade education, to get a job to help his family with financial issues.  Morgan was born the seventh of eleven children.  14 people live in the Morgan house (including Garrett)  Parents- Elizabeth and Sydney Morgan  Nickname= Big Chief Mason

5.  First A-A to own an automobile in Ohio.  In 1907, he opened his own sewing machine store, sold new machines, repaired old ones.  In 1908,he opened a tailoring shop where he would sew back anything that could be sewn together again.  In 1909,he expanded his business, and added a repair shop to his tailoring shop.  First Invention-Hair Straightener.  Garrett won the Carnegie and Bravery Medal for him saving several men from a tunnel explosion under Lake Erie in 1916.

6.  He married Mary Anne Hassek.  Had 3 sons (Cosmo, John, Garrett Jr.)  He won the Carnegie Medal, and the Medal of Bravery.  Garrett’s Gas Mask was first known worldwide after him and three other men saved different men from a tunnel explosion.

7. GGarrett Morgan should, and I hope will always be remembered as more than a inventor…he’ll always be remembered to me as a son, father, husband, and helper first, and an inventor last. Garrett Moran died on August 27 th, 1963, because of glaucoma where he lost 90% of his vision. (Glaucoma is a complicated disease in which damage to the optic nerve leads to progressive, irreversible vision loss. Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness.) But I think he was on of the most amazing inventors ever alive…
