Hiring A Worker

Your assignment: You have opened your own business running a small cafe. You are ready to hire your first three workers. They will MAKE or BREAK your business. They will MAKE you money, or COST you money.

Discussion: Think about times when you have been in a business and been treated badly by an employee… Share?

As we go through the following list of characteristics, write down each title. Then decide how important that quality is to you when hiring your employees… RATE each one from 1-10

Honesty Can you leave money with this person?
Will he steal from your store? Will he be honest with his time card? Will she walk into the backroom to text her boyfriend while YOU are paying her?

Or….

Integrity Will your employee do what she says she is going to do?
Will she bad mouth you to other employees? Will she say she is doing one thing and really be doing another?

Or…

Reliability When your employees don’t show up, you MUST show up, no matter what is planned. Does she call in sick all the time for personal reasons? Is he late a lot? If you don’t have enough workers, your customers will not be satisfied, and might not buy or return to buy the next time. Will she come to work when she’s supposed to?

Or…

Resourcefulness Do you want an employee who is able to figure out what to do when a problem arises – or one who has to stop at every small question and ask you without trying to figure it out on his own? What if there’s a small “break” with no customers. Do you want an employee who will pick up a broom and sweep – not because he is told to, but because he notices that it needs to be done. Will ask questions that will help the job get done, not sit around and wait for help. Knows WHEN to ask a question. “Solve more problems than you create”

Or…

Friendly - Approachable
Would you hire a worker who had a constant frown? How about one who was rude occasionally? How about one who was moody – happy one day and nasty the next? Fits in with the culture of the business? SMILES

Or…

Initiative Will you be willing to keep an employee around who sees a problem (say a big mess by the self-service coffee area) and walk by without fixing it? Do you want your employees to wait around to be told what to do?

Or…

Time Manager Do you want your employees to think carefully about using their time before starting tasks? Or are you willing to hire somebody who doesn’t use their time well. Will you require that your employee do all tasks assigned within the time assigned? Will you tolerate an employee who sits around and waits for you to tell them what to do?

Or….

Clean and Healthy Would you tolerate drug usage?
Do you want an employee who has bad body odor or dirty clothes? How about T-shirts with slogans on them which might offend your customers? Brushed hair, clean teeth, clean hands? How about excessive jewelry or weird tattoos/piercings?

Or…

Flexibility Is able to switch from one task to another as needed.
Doesn’t insist upon doing things one way.

Or…

Respectful Listens to instructions when you give them. Doesn’t have to ask questions that already answered. Will not create or maintain gossip in the work environment. Doesn’t badmouth you to other workers, or talk badly about other workers. Treats machinery and equipment carefully

Or…

Willing to learn Willing to learn new things.
Willing to work hard to perfect tasks. Willing to stretch his or her own personality to better your work place.
