United the various tribes into one army – used army to conquer largest land empire in history
Destroyed anyone who opposed him. “Genghis Khan” means “universal ruler.”
Attacked the Tatars [Golden Horde]for revenge of his father.
Tatars [Golden Horde] pushed west where they conquered Russia

Genghis Khan attacked by surprise and speed
Soldiers were trained horsemanship and at archery.
Conquered more land then any other person of his time. Also killed more people as well.
Had a murderous reputation that often lead to people surrendering without a fight.
Tactics were copied by Hitler known as “Blitzkrieg.”

8. Genghis Khan and China
In 1213, Genghis Khan overran and conquered China
Genghis Khan left one of his generals in charge of China
Reopened China and maintained Silk Road Trade network – first world wide trade network

9. Kublai Khan and Marco Polo
Kublai Khan was Genghis Khan’s grandson
Marco was given a golden tablet to be considered a “VIP’ from Kublai Khan
Marco Polo was given high post in administration
Through his writings Marco Polo encouraged more interest in Asia by Europeans

10. Mongol Influence on Russia
Mongols [Golden Horde] established a policy of religious toleration – allowed Russia to become Eastern Orthodox Christians
Legacy of the Mongols [Golden Horde] on Russia:
Isolated Russia from Western European influences
Example of authoritarian/absolute power given to Mongol ruler was emulated by Russian Rulers
