African Slave Trade Emily Cruz & Ruby Rodriguez

2 Where Slaves Were Present
Zanzibar was a port used to transport slaves through Africa.

3 Moresby Treaty In 1873, he British made it illegal for the people to sell and trade slaves by creating the Moresby Treaty. Even though it was ignored, the slave trade was paused momentarily, causing a decline in slaves for plantations.

4 Slave’s Purpose Zanzibar was in need of labor work, and the French needed slaves for sugar and coffee plantations in Mauritius and Reunion. The slaves were needed for farming, animal rearing, hunting, and fishing. Ivory was at a high demand and the slaves were used to carry it.

5 Caravans Caravans transported slaves through sea to be taken to the buyers and crop owners for plantation work. They were treated poorly on the caravans and most died on the first trip.

6 Slavery Ends When slavery ended, prosperity and economic activity in Zanzibar declined due to the fact that slaves were their main export.

7 Female Slaves Female slaves were preferred over male slaves because they could do household work.
