Section 4: Rise of Civilization in China China Begins to Take Shape Under the Shang Dynasty The Shang dynasty may have been China’s first dynasty, arising around 1766 B.C. Shang society was divided by class, with nobles and warriors at the top and peasants at the bottom. The Zhou Dynasty Further Defines China The Zhou overthrew the Shang and justified it with the idea of the Mandate of Heaven. Zhou supporters were given control of various regions, making China a feudal state. New technology allowed for greater food production and an increase in population. Section 4: Rise of Civilization in China Religious Beliefs Develop in Early China The Chinese worshipped many gods, with the supreme god being Shang Di. During the late Zhou period, thinkers such as Confucius and Laozi taught how to maintain order and harmony. Confucius taught that people must accept their place in society and fulfill the duties of that role. Laozi thought that people should reject conflict and embrace the virtue of yielding. 3 of 8
