2 Americans Move into Texas
Mexico then gained their independence from Spain. Become citizens of Mexico Obey Mexican laws Obey the Roman Catholic Church Mexico agreed to allow American settle in Texas under the conditions…… Conflict begins…

3 Conflict between Americans and Mexicans
Texans (Americans) did not like the laws Mexico was making them follow. Santa Anna came to power in Mexico. He ruled Mexico as a military dictator.

4 Texans Take Action: Battle of the Alamo
In a 12 day fight, Mexicans bombarded the Alamo and slaughtered the Texans. Texans gathered at the Alamo to fight Santa Anna. Texans had little supplies, food, clothes, water. Texans had 187 men compared to Mexico who had 6,000 troops.

5 Remember the Alamo! Weeks later Sam Houston of Texas gathered troops to attack Santa Anna again. Chanting “Remember the Alamo” Texans attacked Mexican Army. Even though Texans were outnumbered, they still won. What do you think helped them win this time? The slaughter at the Alamo made Texans very angry. They wanted revenge on Mexico and Santa Anna.

6 Texas Gains its Independence: The Lone Star Republic
Sam Houston is president of Independent Texas. Texas was bankrupt because of the war. Texas wanted to join the United States to solve their problems.

7 Should the United States Annex Texas?
What does Annex mean? White Southerners wanted to Annex Texas. The issue was slavery: Northerners did not want another state in the Union that had slavery. President Jackson worried that annexing Texas would lead to a war with Mexico. The United States refused to Annex Texas.

8 Election of 1844: James Polk v. Henry Clay
Whig: Henry Clay- opposed expansion Democrat: James Polk – favored expansion Polk wins the election and annexed Texas.

9 Who do you think opposed the war?
The Mexican War The annexation of Texas made Mexicans mad. Polk offered Mexico $ 30 million for the land: Mexico refused. Congress declared war on Mexico. Who do you think opposed the war?

10 United States Wins After a year of fighting, Americans controlled all of Mexico and California. Mexico had no choice but to cede (give) all of Mexico and California to the United States. The Mexican Cession: United States gave Mexico $ 15 million for this land. A few years later United States agrees to pay $ 10 million for the Gadsden Purchase. Manifest Destiny has come true!
