1 Thermodynamics Review Questions
Grab 1 individual whiteboard and 1 marker per person. Share towel erasers.

2 The diagram shows the pressure/volume (p/V) diagram for one cycle PQRS of an engine.
In which sections of the cycle is work done on the engine? A. SP only B. PQ only C. SP and PQ only D. RS and SP only

3 In one cycle of a steam engine, water is heated at high pressure until changed into steam at a very high temperature. This steam expands and is then compressed such that it turns back to water. The graph on the next slide shows the idealised relationship between the pressure P and volume V of the water and steam for one cycle of this steam engine. Using the graph, determine the amount of net work done in one cycle. As a result of compressing the steam, approximately 1.0 x 105 J of energy was transferred to the surroundings. What is the efficiency of this engine?

5 This question is about a heat engine.
A quantity of an ideal gas is used as the working substance of a Heat engine. The cycle of operation of the engine is shown in the p-V diagram to the right. The temperature of the gas, at A, is 300. K * Calculate the temperature, at B, of the gas.
