1 OIE Standard Setting Work in Animal Production Food Safety Seminar for the OIE National Focal Points for Animal Production Food Safety Abu Dhabi, UAE, 14 – 16 January 2014

2 OIE and work in Animal Production Food Safety OIE’s mandate also includes: ‘the management of food-borne risks to human health due to hazards arising from animal production (i.e. farm level to primary processing)’  the OIE develops recommendations for the management of diseases transmissible to humans through food, whether or not animals are affected by such diseases, e.g. Tuberculosis e.g. Salmonella Enteriditis in poultry.

5 Terrestrial Code  sets out standards for the improvement of terrestrial animal health and welfare and veterinary public health worldwide  includes diseases of mammals, birds and bees  2 volumes  new edition each year

10 Recent work in APFS: Terrestrial Code Salmonellosis in poultry Chapters revised to include measures at the animal/farm level to protect human and animal health  Ch. 6.5. Prevention, detection and control of Salmonella in poultry (adopted in 2009)  recommendations relevant to the control of all Salmonella in poultry with special attention to S. Enteritidis and S. Typhimurium  Ch. 6.4. Biosecurity procedures in poultry production (adopted in 2011)  general recommendations for control of infectious agents in poultry that affect animal and/or human health.

11 Recent work in APFS: Terrestrial Code Zoonotic parasites - OIE listed zoonotic parasites Chapters revised to include measures that can be applied at the animal/farm level to protect human and animal health  Ch 8.4. Infection with Echinococcus granulosus (adopted in 2013)  Ch 8.5. Infection with E. multilocularis (adopted in 2013)  Ch 8.14. Infection with Trichinella spp. (adopted in 2013) chapter developed in close collaboration with Codex

12 Terrestrial Code APFS chapters Under development  Revision of Brucellosis chapters  New chapter on Porcine cysticercosis Future work  Salmonella in pigs and cattle (link to proposed Codex work on Salmonella in beef and pork).

13 How does OIE decide what pathogens to develop standards for? OIE listed diseases  i.e. that meet the criteria for inclusion on the OIE list (Chapter 1.2) e.g. Brucellosis, E.granulsosus, Trichinella, Porcine cysticercosis OR Pathogens important to Codex  e.g. Salmonella spp. in poultry, Salmonella in beef and pork

14 What you can do to participate in these standard developments?  Review future Reports of the Terrestrial Code Commission for any work relevant for APFS, e.g. proposed chapters on Brucellosis and Salmonella in pigs and cattle  Next Report due out in March 2014.  NOTE: FPs should also communicate with Codex Contact Points in food safety in your country to coordinate standard setting activities of OIE and Codex at the national level, e.g. Salmonella work.
