2 Curriculum Night 2015/2016 1 st Grade 101

3 Attendance The first bell rings at 8:05 AM Please do not have your child at school any earlier than 7:45 AM Please call the school if your child is going to be absent If your child comes to school after 8:10AM, then you will need to accompany him/her to the office for a tardy slip.

4 After School Pick-Up Pick-up location for first graders is at the front of the school by the trees. Your child must say goodbye and point to whoever is picking them up. Please let us know if alternate changes have been made.

5 Take Home Folder Please check and empty your child’s take home folder. Look it over and if you have any questions, please contact your child’s teacher by email or a note on the back.

6 Behavior Management Every teacher has a management program that should have gone home at the beginning of the year. Teachers try to focus on the positive behaviors and reinforce them. The more time teachers spend on discipline, the less time we have to teach. Teachers would like your support at home about making good choices.

7 Parent/Teacher Communication We feel teachers must work together as partners with parents by communicating on a regular basis to build mutual understanding and consistency for our children. Progress reports will be sent home in the middle of each nine week grading period. Parent/teacher conferences will be in September and March and will be student led.

8 MATH Program – lessons are created to correlate with the new Az. standards - designed to enhance student’s critical thinking and problem solving skills, while focusing on a deeper understanding of concepts. Math will take a hands-on approach and will be center based. Daily math, number of the day, and problem of the day are another supplement we use in first grade.

10 LEARNING MATH CONCEPTS Whole group lessons Partners Small groups

11 READING Language Arts curriculum includes textbooks from the Houghton- Mifflin series, as well as individual guided reading books from A-Z Readers, Wright Group, and Rigby Series. The overall goal of reading is to create a balanced literacy environment where children become independent, FLUENT readers.

12 Reading is Taught Through: SHARED READING GUIDED READING READ ALOUDS LEARNING CENTERS PARTNER READING INDEPENDENT READING PHONEMIC AWARENESS/PHONICS INDEPENDENT WORK

13 SPELLING Word families - the goal is to help children begin to see patterns in words. High frequency words - make up over half of written text. Dictation sentences are also used to reinforce spelling skills.

14 WRITING The goal is to create an independent writer. Children will learn different types of writing. Children will learn the different stages of the writing process.

15 Students Will Experience Writing Through: MODELED WRITING JOURNAL WRITING WRITER’S WORKSHOP SHARED WRITING WRITE FROM THE BEGINNING

16 SCIENCE Students will learn about the inquiry process as well as how people contribute to science. Units will include: Be a Scientist Life Science – Plants and Animals Earth Science – Our Earth, Weather and Sky Physical Science – Matter, Motion and Energy

17 SOCIAL STUDIES –Understand why we have rules and consequences –Describe past events, people and actions –Understand the rights and responsibilities of citizenship –Understand the importance of cooperation in classrooms and communities –Significance of holidays –Map skills –Recognize American symbols

18 Intervention/Enrichment Intervention-This will be a time when students who need additional help will go to one class to receive instruction. Enrichment-This will be a time when students will receive enrichment lessons in different subject areas.
