1 How to set up your compendium
Note: for some of the parts, there is more than way to do this, please use the method you think will fit you the best!

2 Order of sections: options for tabs (~15 tabs)

3 Let’s get started… Print your name on the cover page
If you have a clear sheet on the front, you can put the page in there! Label and organize your tabs now Put data booklet & lab rubric in the appendix OR Cover page Class notes Unit 1 Unit 2 Etc. Book notes & exercises Labs Worksheets Study Guides Appendices Cover page Unit 1 Class notes Book notes & exercises Labs Worksheets Study guide Unit 2 Etc. Appendices

4 Book notes & exercises Must include
Clearly labeled chapter and section (1 pt) Example: “Ch 1.2 BN & Exercises” The essential idea for the section (2 pts) All are found at the beginning of the chapter Main ideas for section (2 pts) Diagrams to illustrate main points (1 pt) Define new/unfamiliar vocabulary terms (1 pt) Any additional Information that you think is important Worked exercises clearly numbered/labeled (2 pts) SHOW WORK! (1 pt) You may choose to imbed the exercises in the notes, but these must be clearly labeled!

5 Class notes & Book notes
These are to benefit you greatly! You may complete book notes before we cover the material in class notes So you have prior knowledge and can ask better questions OR You may take class notes first and then complete book notes So that you will have context when on your own Book Notes are due periodically (see website for dates) to keep you on track and to better manage your time

6 Labs Structure will be different based on the lab
Ex: there are 2 formal IA-style labs - 1 per sem To get you familiar with using the IA rubrics Please use the reference sheets and rubrics to help you and ask questions as you go along! Enroll in chemistry on Turnitin.com: Chemistry 2017: Password: scandium ENROLL ASAP!!!

7 Labs Lab section should be for: Grades are based on Completing pre-lab
Reference to specific lab (guides) Rough drafts (procedures, IV, DV, etc.) Recording raw data Writing observations Practicing calculations Sketching graphs (when necessary) All other material or notes for the specific lab Grades are based on Completing pre-lab Turning in lab on time Write-up w/ IA rubrics Safety, clean-up and disposal in the lab

8 Appendix Write and reference your appendices as often as you can
Data booklet is the most valuable tool you have for the actual IB exam – BE FAMILIAR with it!!!! Rubrics are the most valuable tool for the IA!!!! Add items to appendix as needed (ex. below) For writing labs: Common mess-ups that can cause loss of points Details, details, details!! Fully describe the IV, DV and Operational Definition (i.e. list the masses/times/etc. for IV) Do not use “gather materials” and other obvious information as a step

9 Do not use personal pronouns
Do not use “prove”/“disprove” or “correct”/”incorrect” use supported or not supported Use proper terms when weighing (scale) (Newtons/pounds) or measuring mass (balance) (grams) Use appropriate subscript and superscripts as necessary Tables need to have proper labels and titles Tables need to be re-headed if they span to the next page Use a zero in front of all decimals (i.e NOT .148) Match uncertainties with the values (i.e / grams) All final reported % uncertainties must have 1 sig fig (i.e. 0.4%, 1%) Be aware of proper sig figs which may include additional zeroes Carry units and labels throughout all calculations and reported answers Have a safety/disposal section: what concerns or mindful issues that need to be addressed Use the rubric!

10 Additional grading info IA-style labs: Pre-labs
3 - Research Question/Hypothesis 7 - IV/DV/Controls/operational definition 7 - Background research 7 - Method/procedure 3 - Data tables 5 - Safety considerations 8 - End of lab: Clean-up and waste disposal Total for Pre-lab: 40 points Turn in lab on time: 10 points Completed Labs: 22 points as per the rubrics Operational definition ex: is how you define the dependent variable. If you are measuring mass, how are you measuring it (balance, digital or triple beam, etc.) and with what units are you measuring? Defining how to measure viscosity ex: measure ball drop vs running down board, both will get values, but not necessarily the same answer. They may not support each other. But if you define how that value is being determined and obtained, this will enable you to support your own hypothesis. Who has been to east coast? Ask them how long it took. All different answers because not telling where they started, how they traveled, where they were going, etc.

11 Compendiums will be graded at the end of each semester
Each section properly tabbed and organized (based on your choice at beginning of year) 5 – Topics All topics present and labeled 5 – Book Notes/exercises Labeled and in chronological order 5 – Labs Data and information labeled and in order 5 – Assignments Worksheets, extra practice, etc. all easily discerned 5 – Appendix In order and labeled (can use sticky tabs if necessary) Total for compendium: 25 points each semester

12 Final exams each semester
These are cumulative and worth 30% of your semester grade First semester (fall) Whole year (spring) Divided into 2 sections Last class day before finals: free response portion (~45-60) Day of finals: multiple choice portion (45) Why?...
