1 Chapter 9 Section 2 Speed and Velocity

2 Calculating Speed To calculate the speed of an object, divide the distance the object travels by the amount of time it takes to travel that distance. (Speed=Distance/Time). Average Speed is total distance traveled divided by total time it takes to travel that distance. (follow the example on the board). Instantaneous Speed is the rate at which an object is moving at a certain time.

3 Velocity Velocity is the speed of an object in a given direction.
Changes in velocity may be due to changes in speed, changes in direction, or both.

4 Speed and Average Speed Problems
1. A Kangaroo hops 60m in 5 seconds, What is Kangaroo’s speed? 2. What is your average speed if you take 0.5 hours to walk 4,000m? 3. If the average speed of a car is 110km/h how long will it take the car to travel 715km?

5 Graphing speed The slope of a distance-versus time graph represents speed, that is, the rate that distance changes in relation to time. Slope=Rise/Run
