1 Human Body TSW describe the structure and function of cells, tissues, organs, and organ systems. TSW explain the purpose of the major organ systems in the human body: Skeletal, Muscular, Digestion, Respiratory, Nervous, Endocrine, Cardiovascular/Circulatory, Excretory/Urinary, Integumentary, Reproductive, and Immune

2 The Digestive System Life Science laser disc volume 2

3 Main Job of the Digestive System
Break down foods for the body into simpler substances. Provides energy

4 Types of Digestion Chemical Digestion Mechanical Digestion This type of digestion breaks down foods into a different substance. (This happens in the stomach, or when food mixes with saliva.) This type of digestion breaks down foods into smaller pieces.

5 Teeth & Tongue Teeth: incisors and canine teeth tear and cut food, and premolars and molars are used to grind and crush. Tongue: A large skeletal muscle that pushes food to the back of the mouth. 27970 – laser disc

6 Salivary Glands The function of these glands are to wet/coat food so it will move down the esophagus. Produces saliva Mixture of water and ptyalin Ptyalin changes starches into sugar. 27969 – laser disc

7 Epiglottis Closes the passage to the lungs while we swallow.
Makes the hiccough sound. movie

8 Esophagus Connects the mouth to the stomach
Muscles in the wall force down food. These waves of contractions of muscle are called peristalsis. 29312 – laser disc

9 Stomach Made of smooth muscle
Contains gastric juices that digests proteins Digested proteins become a thick liquid called chyme 29314, – digesting meat, – cow stomach

10 Small Intestines Liquefied food is squirted into small intestines 3 times a minute. Digestion occurs in the first part of the small intestine called the duodenum Food nutrients are absorbed through the lining. (villi) 30441, 30894

11 Liver Blood flows through the liver and all wastes and poisons are pulled out. Stores vitamins and sugars If damaged, it can repair itself. Produces bile – which breaks down fat. movie

12 Gall Bladder Small sac that stores bile from the liver.

13 Pancreas Gland that produces the hormone insulin.
Insulin controls your blood sugar level Blood sugar level too high – you develop diabetes 30893

14 Large Intestines and Rectum
Also known as the colon Water, salts, and fiber (cellulose) are found in the colon 30896
