2 Present Tense Expresses an action that is going on now or shows something that happens regularly

3 Past Tense Expresses an action that happened in the past

4 Future Tense Expresses an action that will take place in the future
Helping verb (will, shall, could, may) help show future tense

5 Action Verbs Tells what the subject is doing

6 Linking Verb Connects or links a subject to a noun or an adjective in the predicate

7 Helps the main verb express tense or voice

8 Add an –ed to move the word to the past walk, walked, have walked
Regular Verbs Add an –ed to move the word to the past walk, walked, have walked

9 Irregular Verbs The whole word changes when moved to the past
Eat, ate, have eaten

10 Present Perfect Verbs Expresses an action that began in the past but continues or is completed in the present Add has or have to the past participle I have wondered about the theory of relativity.

11 Past Perfect Verbs Expresses action that started in the past and was completed in the past Add had to the past participle I had hoped to go to that concert.

12 Future Perfect Verbs Expresses an action that begins in the future and is completed by a specific time in the future Use “will have” to the past participle By the year 2050, they will have discovered a cure for cancer.

13 Present Continuous Verbs
Expresses an action that is NOT completed at the time of stating it Add am, is or are to the ing form of a verb We are learning about verbs in ELA.

14 Past Continuous Verbs Add was or were to the ing form of the verb.
Expresses an action that was happening at a certain time in the past Add was or were to the ing form of the verb. Our students were beginning to work together at Tucker Leadership.

15 Future Continuous Verbs
Expresses action that will take place at a certain time in the future Add will be to the ing form of the verb Someday, one of you will be running this country.

16 Active Voice Active voice is when the subject of the sentence is DOING THE ACTION in a sentence.

17 Passive Voice Passive voice is when the subject of the sentence is NOT DOING THE ACTION in a sentence. Someone/something else is doing the action Has a helping verb + past participle or past tense verb

18 A verb that transfers its action to the direct object.
Transitive Verbs A verb that transfers its action to the direct object. The object makes the meaning of the sentence complete. It will always be an action verb with the D.O. (noun) after.

19 Intransitive verb Does not need an object to complete its meaning
All linking verbs are intransitive Some action verbs are intransitive

20 Verbals Words made from verbs that act as other parts of speech

21 Gerunds A verb form that ends in –ing and is used as a noun
Worrying is useless. You should stop worrying.

22 Participles A verb form ending in –ing or –ed and is used as an adjective. Participles usually start a participial phrase The sound of the storm shaking and quaking scares my little girl.

23 Infinitives A verb form introduced by the word –to and can be used as a noun, an adjective, or an adverb. I am afraid to go outside during storms. I need to print my paper.

24 Miscellaneous Subjunctive mood- this verb is usually in a complex sentence and it speaks of possibility, hope, and hypothetical situations. “ I wish you were here.” Indicative mood- this verb is used to express facts or opinions. “Joe picked up the box.” Imperative mood- used to give orders or make a request. “Pick up the boxes, Joe.” Interrogative mood- used to ask a question. “Joe, can you pick up the boxes?
