Singapore Math

It is the highly successful national math program that has been taught in the country of Singapore since 1982. In 2000 the Singapore Math Primary Mathematics series was adapted for use in the United States. What is Singapore Math?

Singapore students ranked highest in the world on the math portion of the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study, TIMSS. (1995, 1999, 2003) Why Singapore Math?

What does Singapore Math offer Hall County students? A new approach to developing in-depth mathematical understanding through: concept building activities unique mental math strategies guided lessons problem solving skills

Singapore Math also….. - Meets or exceeds 85%-95% of the Georgia Performance Standards for math (Varies by grade level) -Correlates to the new CRCT content descriptors (numbers and operations =50%-55%) Singapore Math focuses on building mathematical understanding and problem solving skills

How does Singapore Math accomplish student success? Detailed teachers editions User friendly student texts Consumable student workbooks Manipulatives and hands-on activities Unique strategies

Teacher Editions The structured teachers guides give step by step directions for guiding students into learning. Teachers become math students themselves as they learn new strategies and develop new mathematical knowledge. The guided (not scripted) lessons provide more opportunity for consistency of instruction in every classroom and among schools.

Student Texts and Workbooks Student friendly texts provide examples and guided practice Consumable student workbooks in grades 1-5 provide an opportunity for skill practice and enhancement

Manipulatives and Hands-on Activities Manipulatives and hands-on activities are used extensively to build student understanding of mathematical processes and concepts Singapore Math uses number disks, place value charts, shape cutouts, number dice, number cards, and games

Student Number Disks

Demonstration Number Disks Demonstration

Teacher made games

Games with number cards

StrategiesStrategies Number ladders are used to teach multiplication Bar modeling is used to solve word problems Number bonds help students develop mental math strategies

To ensure success teachers will need to…. Study the teachers guide regularly Adapt to the new style of teachers guide for planning and teaching Follow a GPS/Singapore Math alignment

Teachers will need to… Supplement some of the GPS strands such as measurement, probability, and data analysis Create teacher made materials for student activities Continue to provide math fact drill and practice

Teachers will need to… Fill in gaps for students not exposed to prior Singapore strategies, expectations, and curriculum, especially in upper grades Extend math terminology to match the GPS vocabulary requirements Develop more assessments than are provided in the program

To ensure success administrators will need to… Provide adequate training and support throughout the first years of the implementation process (Examples: Singapore consultant for teacher orientation this summer, Train the Trainer participants, Singapore professional development throughout the year)

Administrators will need to… Contact schools that are successfully teaching Singapore Math and develop a plan of implementation Accommodate for the needs of adult learners

Administrators will need to… Administrators will need to… Provide time and resources for teachers to create teacher made manipulatives and games Provide time for grade level and cross grade level collaboration Communicate with parents about why Singapore Math will be taught

Administrators will need to…. Build in a 75 minute math block for all Singapore Math classrooms Allow the teachers to follow the Singapore Math pacing guide instead of the state suggested pacing guided Consider adopting the Every Day Counts calendar math program to provide added support

Every Day Counts Calendar Math

Why all the work to make Singapore Math a success?

The Singapore Math program is rigorous! It has 25 years of proven success!! Singapore Math is right for our students!!! The Singapore Math program is rigorous! It has 25 years of proven success!! Singapore Math is right for our students!!!

Implementation cost for students in grades 2,3,4, and 5 Student Text A $8.50 Student Text B $8.50 Student Workbook A $8.50 Student Workbook B $8.50 Place Value Disks $12.95 Hundreds Board $1.10 Total cost per student $48.05 1 st Grade does not need number disks Cost per 1st grade student $35.10

Estimated implementation cost per classroom of 22 students Per student cost $48.05 x 22= $1,057 (2 student texts, 2 student workbooks, number disks, hundreds boards) Teacher editions $21.00 x 2 = $42 Total =$1,099

Additional Implementation Cost Additional cost will include materials for teacher made games and class sets of manipulatives Supplies should include but not be limited to construction paper, tag board, 11x18 copy paper, laminating film, and magnetic tape All classrooms should have sets of counters
