1 Biology Week of March 21-25

2 Lab #14 Lactose Lab Prediction: How do Lactaid pills work?
Write an equation for what you think is going on.

3 Some info about Lactose….
Lactose is the sugar in milk. Lactase is a type of protein called an enzyme that digests it. No Lactase = Lactose Intolerance Glucose Galactose Lactose

4 How can we test for this chemical reaction?
Glucose Galactose Lactose Lactase Glucose Galactose + Lactase Cells need glucose for cellular respiration. People who are lactose intolerant don’t have enough lactase to break down lactose. One option is to take Lactaid. Lactaid is the enzyme lactase that helps lactose intolerant people break down lactose.

5 Opening Activity: March 21, 2016
1. If you have not done so, copy lab #14 data table into your journal. (See example titled Lactose Enzyme Reaction at table) What is the role of an enzyme? Read through lab #14. a. Highlight #2, are you ready to pay attention? How will we be testing if an enzyme reaction happened or not? Draw a picture of what will go into well #2. I can… Explain how heating enzymes affects its function. Homework: DNA: Structure & Replication Quiz 3/25

6 Testing for Glucose Glucose test strips indicate presence or absence of glucose in a solution

7 Lab #14 Lactose Lab Predictions:
How does heating an enzyme affect its function? How does the type of sugar present affect the activity of lactase? Data Collection: Enzyme Reaction to Solutions

8 Lab #18 Lactose Lab Type of Solution Prediction Glucose Test (+ / -)
Well 1: milk Well 2: heated lactase and milk Well 3: non-heated lactase and milk Well 4: Glucose solution Well 5: Sucrose solution Well 6: non-heated lactase and sucrose

12 Complete Enzyme Animation Questions
Opening Activity: March 22, 2016 Read the paragraph on lab #14 sheet, how does Lactose and sucrose differ? Draw a picture. How did the type of sugar affect the reaction of lactase? Do you have a stamp for Lab #13 questions? HOMEWORK FOR TONIGHT: Complete Enzyme Animation Questions I can… Explain how enzymes function in different conditions. Homework: DNA: Structure & Replication Quiz 3/25 Test/Quiz Make up HR

13 Lab #14 Lactose

14 Lab #14 Sucrose

15 Lab #14 Lactose Reaction

16 Goals for Today Lab #14 Claim and Evidence (stamp)
Enzyme Animation and Questions (HOMEWORK if not completed in class!) 3. Pick up Enzyme/Protein Reading 4. Lab #14 Reasoning Statements (stamp)

17 Lab #14 Conclusion CLAIM:
How does heating an enzyme affect its function? How does the type of sugar present affect the activity of lactase? EVIDENCE: Results for enzyme function when heated and not heated. Results for enzyme working/not working for different types of sugars (lactose vs. sucrose).

18 Enzyme Animation Online
WRITE FOLLOWING 4 QUESTIONS IN YOUR JOURNAL—LEAVE ENOUGH ROOM FOR YOUR ANSWERS! 1. What is the difference in a reaction with or without an enzyme? Why can an enzyme help only one reaction? How can an enzyme be used repeatedly in a reaction? What happens to an enzyme when it is heated or placed in acid?

19 DNA Structure and Replication Review
Opening Activity: March 23, 2016 I will stamp your enzyme animation questions. What happens to lactase when it is heated up? What happens to lactase after it is done breaking down lactose? HOMEWORK FOR TONIGHT: DNA Structure and Replication Review I can… Explain how enzymes function in different conditions. Homework: DNA: Structure & Replication Quiz 3/25 Test/Quiz Make up HR

20 Goals for Today Lab #14 Claim and Evidence (stamp)
Enzyme Animation and Questions (HOMEWORK if not completed in class!) 3. Pick up Enzyme/Protein Reading 4. Lab #14 Reasoning Statements (stamp)

21 STUDY for DNA: Structure & Replication QUIZ
Opening Activity: March 24, 2016 I will stamp your DNA review. Find your plicker page for some review questions. Pick up Science Expo Rough Draft page at front table. HOMEWORK FOR TONIGHT: STUDY for DNA: Structure & Replication QUIZ I can… Organize my science expo project so I know what my responsibility for April 1st Homework: DNA: Structure & Replication Quiz 3/25 Test/Quiz Make up HR

22 Upcoming Dates in Biology
EVENT Friday March 25th DNA Structure and Replication Quiz Friday April 1st Science Expo Rough Drafts Monday April 4th Enzyme Quiz Friday April 8th Protein Synthesis Quiz Thursday April 21st Science Expo Projects Due

23 Opening Activity: March 25, 2016
Pick up the following at front table: Protein Reading (if you don’t already have) Lab #15 Toothpickase Science Expo Rubric (if you don’t already have) Tape the protein reading and lab #15 into journal. Read Lab #15 Toothpickase. Complete the checkpoint prelab questions on first page, Ms. Fox will stamp on Monday. I can… Explain what you know about DNA and make progress toward Science Expo goals. Homework: Science Expo Rough Draft 4/1
