Symbol & Allegory “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?” Did this story confuse you? Why? One of the most difficult devices to discuss in literature is allegory. There’s the face-value story, and then there’s what’s REALLY going on. How do you determine what that is? Ask yourself lots of questions. How can you tell this story was published in the 1960s?

What events led to that finale? Why does Oates do that?
