1
Goal – 3 Atoms Students will be able to identify parts of the atom and how the parts of the atom play a role in the periodic table.
2
What is an Atom? Greek for "uncuttable" the atom was orignally thought to be the smallest item known to man. An atom is the smallest particle of an element.
3
What is an element? A pure substance, that cannot be broken down into any other substances, by physical or chemical means One of over 100 basic materials that make up ALL matter.
4
What is atomic theory? Grew as a series of models that developed from experimental evidence. As more evidence was collected the theory and models were revised over time.
5
What are the 4 parts of Dalton's theory?
All elements are comprised of atoms that cannot be divided.
6
What are the 4 parts of Dalton's theory?
2. All atoms of the same element are exactly alike and have the same mass. Atoms of different elements are different and have different masses.
7
What are the 4 parts of Dalton's theory?
3. An atom of one element cannot be changed into an atom of a different element. Atoms cannot be created or destroyed in any chemical change, only rearranged.
8
What are the 4 parts of Dalton's theory?
4. Every compound is composed of atoms of different elements, combined in a specific ratio.
9
What did Thompson find? Negatively charged particles called ELECTRONS
10
What did Rutherford find?
He found a positively charged center of the atom.
11
What is the nucleus? Positively charged center of the atom
12
What are protons? Positively charged particles in the center of the atom.
13
What is an energy level? Electrons are found outside the nucleus in a cloudlike region. Each group of electrons exist in varying amounts of energy.
14
What is a neutron? Neutrally charged particle found in the nucleus
16
Goal Students will be able to identify part of the atom and how the parts of the atom play a role in the periodic table.
