2 The Japanese seem unbeatable!

3 The Allies want to strike back!
Americans and Australians. The United States in particular wants revenge for Pearl Harbor.

4 The Doolittle Raid

5 Lieutenant Colonial James H. Doolittle.
April, 1942. 16 B-25 bombers. Bomb Tokyo and some other cities. Little damage but showed the Japanese that they were vulnerable.

6 The Allies will turn the tide of the war…

7 Americans and Australians strike.
They find a Japanese strike force headed for Morseby, in New Guinea. Capturing this would put the Japanese in striking distance of Australia!

8 The Battle of the Coral Sea.
New type of warfare. Airplanes from carriers. Ships could not even see each other! Allies lost more but stopped the Japanese advance.

9 Aircraft carrier.

11 Midway Island.

12 Battle of Midway This island had an important airfield.
We cracked Japanese code.

13 Admiral Chester Nimitz
Admiral Chester Nimitz is in charge of the American Pacific Fleet.

14 Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto
Commander of Japanese fleet.

15 The Battle of Midway June 4, 1942.
We let the Japanese begin their attack on the island. Airplane attack. We attack their ships!

16 The Battle of Midway We destroy: 332 Japanese airplanes.
All 4 aircraft carriers. A Cruiser. Yamamoto orders a withdrawal!

17 The allies begin their offensive!
General Douglas MacArthur. Commander of allied land forces in the Pacific.

18 There is a big problem.

19 Japanese are dug in on hundreds of islands!

20 Island Hopping Developed by MacArthur.
Hop past heavily defended strongholds. Take weaker islands that are closer to Japan.

21 Guadalcanal, the Solomon Islands.

22 Battle of Guadalcanal. Japanese were building an airbase.
We had to hit hard and fast. Send THE MARINES!

23 The Battle of Guadalcanal.
August 7th, 1942 Marines took airfield quickly, but then the fighting became SAVAGE.

24 The Battle of Guadalcanal.
6 months of fighting at land and sea. Japanese lost 24,000 of 36,000 soldiers.

25 Meanwhile… Back in North Africa!
