2 Photosynthesis & Respiration
Cells & Heredity Chapters 2.1 and 2.2 Pages 50-59 Begin class by sitting calmly for a few moments. Ask students what they’re doing – breathing. Why?

3 Photosynthesis The process by which plants make food Photo Synthesis
Light Synthesis Putting together

4 Capturing Light Sunlight is used to carry out reactions
Chloroplast in leaves captures the light Another plant-only organelle Green color is the pigment of chlorophyll.

5 Making the Food Plant gathers water (H2O) from roots
Takes in carbon dioxide (CO2) via stomata Small openings on the underside of leaf H2O and CO2 undergo reactions driven by light energy to create sugars.

6

7 Eating Sunlight

8 Respiration Starts in the Cytoplasm where glucose is broken down
Then, in the Mitochondria, oxygen is added and energy is released.

9 Fermentation Releasing energy from sugars without using oxygen
Used by organisms where there is little / no O2 Alcoholic: releases alcohol and CO2 (yeast)

10 How are Respiration and Energy connected?
After you eat food, your body breaks it down and stores it as carbs / starches Just as a plant

11 Fermentation Lactic-Acid
Created when cells are using oxygen faster than it can be replaced Instead of respiration, Fermentation occurs Byproduct of lactic acid causes soreness.
