Doppler Assessment of Patients With Normal and High Left Ventricular Filling Pressure (Top) In a patient with normal left ventricular filling pressure, the mitral E/A is <0.8. Although this would suffice to predict LVFP, an isovolumic relaxation time of >80 ms is also supportive of normal LVFP. (Middle) In a patient with high LVFP, mitral E/A falls in the intermediate range (0.8 to 1.8). However, a short IVRT predicts high LVFP. (Bottom) In a patient with very high LVFP, mitral E/A is significantly >1.8. Although proceeding to IVRT is not necessary, a short duration confirms high LVFP. In all cases, early diastolic mitral annulus velocity (e′) is reduced. LVDP = left ventricular diastolic pressure; PCWP = pulmonary capillary wedge pressure; other abbreviations as in Figure 2.
