2 The Nation Starts to Expand
During its early years, the US had no money To raise money through land sales, Congress passed the Land Ordinance of 1785 and the Northwest Ordinance of 1787 American leaders began to think of our nation’s expansion

New states added: Vermont (1791) Kentucky (1792) Tennessee (1796) Ohio (1803) New state constitutions written to limit the power of state governors

Land Ordinance of 1785 Establishes a system for surveying new American land in the Northwest Territory called the Public Land Survey System Townships divided up into 36 squares Who came up with this idea? Jefferson, of course!

8 Land Ordinance of 1785 Every 16th square was set aside for public schools. The land was either used to build schools on, or sold to raise money for schools.

11 Northwest Ordinance (1787)
Sets rules for statehood in the Northwest Territory In order for a territory to become a new state, they needed to have: A governor A legislature At least 60,000 settlers

President Jefferson was the leader of the Republican Party Jefferson’s vision for America was a nation of yeoman farmers, small landowners who owned just enough land to support themselves and their families

Napoleon takes control in Revolutionary France, and asserts control of French Louisiana

Napoleon had given up hopes for a North American empire He was having enough trouble fighting wars in Europe He also needed to raise money

Buying Louisiana from France has two BIG benefits: It DOUBLES the size of the United States, and opens up great land for farming Gives the US full access to the Mississippi River for trade and transportation

In 1803, the United States purchases Louisiana from France for $15 million The United States now owns the Port of New Orleans and has FULL access to the Mississippi River The Federalists, of course, are unhappy. Why? The Louisiana Purchase indicates a friendly relationship with France A vast new agrarian America means the power of the Eastern cities could be diminished
