2 Enforcing Mercantilism
The Colonial Economy: Mercantilism Beginning around 1650, the British government pursued a policy of mercantilism in international trade. Mercantilism created a trade system whereby Americans provided _________________to Britain, and Britain used the raw materials to produce manufactured goods that were sold in European markets and back to the colonies. As suppliers of raw materials only, the colonies could not compete with Britain in manufacturing. English ships and merchants were always favored, excluding other countries from sharing in the British Empire’s wealth. Directions. Below is mind map of the various acts, laws, and events that unraveled as a result of the policy of mercantilism. As England began to pass more laws to protect trade, the colonies will chose to rebel, revolt, protest, and boycott those laws. The first bubble is the name of the law OR event. *The skull and crossbones stamp was actually a political cartoon that was printed on newspapers to mark the place where the stamp was to be affixed. *This stamp showed the hatred for the Stamp Act. *Colonial cities boycotted British goods to show protest to the Stamp Act *Act repealed (cancelled) 1766

*The Townshend Acts create more turmoil in the colonies with more protests and boycotting of British goods. *In response, Great Britain sends more British troops, called RED COATS to Boston *Tensions rise at Boston Harbor, a snowball fight errupts, 5 colonists killed. *Why use the word MASSACRE to describe this event?
