3 Minnesota Education Commissioner Brenda Cassellius on the Impact of PBIS
“It is truly remarkable that we can attribute a majority of the decreases in suspensions to schools using PBIS. These schools understand that suspensions are not an effective measure of discipline, and often cause a child to fall behind in class.”

4 State Level Updates Impact of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports – PBIS Schools implementing Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) represent approximately 25 percent of Minnesota districts, yet account for approximately 62.1 percent of the decrease in suspensions! PBIS praised by our Education Commissioner Cassellius: “It is truly remarkable that we can attribute a majority of the decreases in suspensions to schools using PBIS. These schools understand that suspensions are not an effective measure of discipline, and often cause a child to fall behind in class. I want to thank Governor Dayton for recognizing the importance of this work and including it in his budget proposal.” Education Minnesota President Denise Specht’s Statement: “The program called ‘Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports’ has produced promising results in districts where it has been implemented with sufficient training and support for the teachers and other staff members.”

5 What does the use of data look like for Cohort 11??
Sustainability Research identifies four factors that predict sustained implementation of PBIS. District Priority School Priority Capacity Building Team Use of Data school team/staff skill, regular team meetings, data collection, use of data for decision making, presenting data to staff and community What does the use of data look like for Cohort 11?? education.state.mn.us

10 Reflection Questions-Data Decisions
Has your PBIS team been reviewing other sources of data on a regular basis? If “yes”, what types of decisions have the data informed? If “no”, how might the data inform decision-making? What trends are apparent in your data (both strengths and weaknesses)? What objective and measurable goals could be set for school improvement based on these data? - Example, increase percentage of students feeling safe from 72% to 80% by 2007/2008 school year What additional information could be used or collected to better understand these data? How are you (or could you) sharing these data with school staff, parents, and students?

11 Suggested End of Year Action Planning Topics
Evaluation of what worked this year Planning for end/start of school year SWPBS activities for 1st day/week of school Reporting back to staff/community Set-up/review of data Consideration of sec/tert practices & systems Celebrating accomplishments/progress “12 month activity plan,” including mtg & professional development schedule
