1 Subgroup 5. Other parts of the manual
14-15 February 2012

2 Questions Age limits Interview training
What about elderly people who live in rest homes? Can they also participate? And what about example the baker, is he an establishment or an individual from a household? Can he participate? Interview training What’s professionally? Is 2 hours training for a newcomer enough? Is 1 interview = experienced? 14-15 February 2012

3 Added Interview training
It’s important that the interviewer talks perfectly the language from the country, otherwise respondent can be distrust. Every question has to be discussed so that the interviewer really understands the content and possible reactions/questions and answers. It’s important to encourage respondents to take part, without being overly forceful. A manual with argumentations can be helpful. An example added in the annex to the TF document. 14-15 February 2012

4 Added Interviews Debriefing is very important in the beginning so things still can be changed. Best after 1 or 2 weeks fieldwork. No suggestive answers proposed by the interviewer 14-15 February 2012

5 Proposals/Interviews
Prepare the people for a phone call or an interviewer that will pass by for an interview. (One or two weeks before the fieldwork starts a letter has to be sent. It increases the response rate. Also PAPI interviews have to be accompanied by a letter, explaining the survey). To follow up the interviewers; not only the supervisor of the investigation agency but also the countries Encipher 14-15 February 2012

6 Proposals/Non-response
Contact attempts: to reach one individual minimum 5 attempts have to be taken. Example: one time in the morning, one time in the evening, one time two days later, A manual has to be made how to handle missing values, impossibilities, Common codes for types on non-response (see annex) People who don’t want to participate. To collect basic data from them; age, sex and maybe reason why they don’t want to participate? Calibration (Presentation of the sampling group) 14-15 February 2012

7 Additional proposals Description of weighting procedures (The document provided by sampling group?) Calculation of response quota; include certain criteria concerning non-response rate and a description how this rate influences the outcome Handling of missings (including in the calculation base or not; especially when calculating victimisation prevalence) Handling of implausibility in the data Pre-test (What should be obligatory?) Guidance of quality assurance and content of the quality report (see regulation, Article 10) Guidance to document fieldwork procedure There are questions on the number of events in last 12 months, but if the number exceeds four, the actual figure remains undetermined. It would be good if we will get a concrete figure instead of "Five times or more". This would be useful in international comparisons, although not important in most types of crimes 14-15 February 2012
