2 The Age of Exploration Notes
Standard & 7-1.2

3 1. Europe Explores Many events led to the closure of the Silk Road.
This led Europeans to find all water route to Asia!

4 1. Europe Explores During the 1400s, Europeans set out on an Age of Exploration. Europeans looked past their borders to new land, waters, and continents.

5 2. Active Explorers 5 European countries were active in exploration:
Portugal – East and North Coast of Brazil Spain – New Spain, Mexico, South America England – New England, Southern Atlantic Coast France – Caribbean, Northern Atlantic Coast Netherlands - South America, Caribbean, New York

6 3. The Church’s Role Spain was able to get the most land in the New World -The Pope drew a Line of Demarcation to divide the New World between Spain and Portugal.

7 4. New Technology A-2 major inventions helped navigate a ship’s course over water. Compass Astrolabe B- Navigators also improved their map-making techniques: Cartographers.

8 5. New Ships The Portuguese designed a new ship called a caravel. It has: Several masts instead of just one A rudder to steer the ships course Sits high on the water so it can stay close to shore MAST Rudder

9 6. Weapons used to Conquer
The Chinese gave the Europeans the power to fire a new weapon, Gunpowder! This new fire power allowed sailors to take captives and conquer new lands for their country without superior numbers of people! This new invention gave the Europeans the power to conquer the world.

10 7. Scientific Revolution
All of these technological advances were made possible by the Scientific Revolution! A MAJOR CHANGE in the way people thought about the natural world Scientists began to use reason instead of relying on Church Authority.

11

12 8. Copernicus A. Copernicus discovered that the universe was heliocentric instead of geocentric. The Sun is at the Center of the Universe He realized that his ideas would cause a lot of conflict with the Catholic Church. He kept his work a secret until the end of his life out of fear of the church.

13

14 9. Galileo Galileo proved that Copernicus was right!
He also invented a telescope. He was excommunicated by the Church and placed under house arrest.

15 Isaac Newton Newton used reason and the scientific method to discover several laws that are still used today. Principles of Light – Prism Laws of gravity Invented a new math called calculus.
