1 Compare and contrast active and passive transport
Homework: do any missing work before winter break Turn in: Homework packet #14!

2 Today’s Plan Symbiotic Relationships Weird Animal Behavior
Predator-Prey Relationships

3 Symbiotic Relationships

4 Symbiosis Card Sort Sort the cards provide to you into the appropriate boxes Put all the mutualism cards into the mutualism box and all the parasitism cards into the parasitism boxes Check your answers with your group before gluing!

5 Animal Behavior When thinking about evolution, what determines how successful an organism is at life?

6 Biological Goal Biologically, we are programmed to survive and reproduce All animal behaviors that have evolved will help a species achieve that ‘biological’ goal We are going to look at three examples!

7 Courtship Dances https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nWfyw51DQfU
Courtship Dances are used to attract mates. Mating calls are also a common way male species attract mates

8 The Good Gene Hypothesis
Mating behaviors such as mating calls or mating dances show a female how ‘fit’ you are for your environment If you are strong enough to grow bright feathers and put on a nice ‘dance’ female birds will think that the male bird has good genes and is worth mating with An extreme example:

9 Pheromone Communication
Pheromones are chemicals that organisms can use to communicate Ants, bees, and termites commonly used pheromones for communication In ants, pheromones are used to leave a chemical ‘trail’ to a food source

10 Territorial Defense https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LI9s-xu6Bzk
Many species are territorial to protect their habitat or area This ensures only THEY can mate with the females

11 Ecological Relationships
Which is predator? Which is prey? Work together as a group As your complete this, really focus on the population size changes for predator and prey over time AND review other terms we discussed in class today
