3 What is Adsorption Clarification?
Adsorption clarification is an upflow process using bouyant media for high rate clarification. Features: AC can replace conventional flocculation and settling. Similar to Deep Bed filtration. Operates at % of nominal flow rate. Pretreatment addition to existing filters. Media can be floated out for tank inspection. PAC addition creates an excellent adsorption contactor for taste and odor removal. No reversal of flow needed. Clarification and cleaning are both up flow. Quick start up, no sludge blanket required. A DeepBed filter is a granular filter typically with a 4 foot media depth at a filtration rate of more than 2 gpm/ft2. Coarse media is normally used to encourage deep penetration of solids into the media bed. This allows for longer filtration runtimes. Poly-aluminium chloride (PAC) is an inorganic coagulant

4 Adsorption Clarifier Media
Specific Gravity slightly less than 1.0 Permanent for life of plant Minimal maintenance Effective size ~ 2.5 mm NSF 61 approved Rolled and scarified design increases surface area for floc capture

5 Stand-Alone Adsorption Clarifier

6 Adsorption Clarifier Media
AC Media Technical Details: Buoyant Media Specific gravity slightly < 1.0 Allows for complete fluidization Effective size ~2.5 mm Patented rolled and scarified media offers superior performance NSF 61 available Competitive advantage Lasts for life of plant No maintenance required

7 Adsorption Clarifier Technology
AC replaces conventional flocculation and settling Coagulated material is flocculated by mixing that occurs in the tortuous path through the AC media This material is removed by adsorption onto the AC media surface Settling not a factor AC units operate at % of nominal flow rates AC media can be floated out for inspection PAC addition creates an excellent adsorption contactor for taste and odor removal Extremely low maintenance

9 AC High Flow Rate Reduces Footprint
5 to 15 GPM/FT2 Footprint < 10% Of Conventional Clarifier

10 Adsorption Clarifier Performance
Proper conditioning of raw water provides turbidity removals across AC from 70 % to 90 %, typical AC typically cleans 2 to 4 times per every filter backwash 0.5 1.0 1.5 2.0 2.5 3.0 3.5 4.0 TURBIDITY, NTU INFLUENT EFFLUENT
