The Gippsland Massacres was the fight between the Australian indigenous tribe of Gunai (Kurnai) and the European settlers in Gippsland, Victoria from The indigenous people were fighting the European’s invasion of their land. We call it a massacre instead of a war because in the vast majority of incidences it wasn’t a battle, but the indiscriminatory mass slaughter of indigenous people.

5 How many were killed? Because of the lack of records we can’t know exactly how many were killed is the Gippsland Massacres but we know that it was at least 300. Although some estimate that it was more like 1,ooo people. The Europeans had an absolute advantage due to their superior weaponry. Diseases introduced from the 1820’s by European sealers and whalers also had a significant impact on the indigenous population.

6 White woman of Gippsland
One of the more famous massacres was the ‘White woman of Gippsland’ incident that took place from in Central Gippsland. This was when a European woman was supposedly rumoured to have been held against her will by Aboriginal Kurnai people. This led to much speculation and many search parties. For almost two years the Aboriginal people of the area were hunted for what they were imagined to have done and at least 50 were killed. Although no such woman was ever found and she is now widely accepted to be a product of rumours and misplaced suspicion.
