Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space. Matter is made of particles called atoms. Atoms are too small to be seen. Examples of matter: our body, air, water Can you think of nonexamples?

4 Mass is a measure of the amount of matter an object has.
For example, a metal teaspoon has more mass than a plastic spoon even though they are the same size.

5 Measuring Mass The standard unit for measuring mass is the gram.
A pan balance can be used to compare the masses of two objects. If the two objects balance each other on the pan balance, then they have the same amount of mass.

6 Measuring Weight Weight is the downward pull on an object due to gravity. Weight is measured by using a scale. The standard scientific unit (SI) for weight is the newton (N). A common or english unit for weight is the pound (lb)

7 What is the difference between mass and weight?
Mass is a measure of how much matter an object contains, but weight is the downward pull on an object due to gravity.

9 Volume Volume is the amount of space matter occupies.
A bowling ball and a basketball take up almost the same amount of space which means they have about the same volume.

10 Determining Volume by Formula
Volume = length x width x height x or V=lwh

11 Measuring Volume by Displacement
1. Add water to a graduate cylinder. Note the volume of the water by reading the water level in the cylinder. 2. Submerge the irregular shaped object in the water. Because the object and water cannot share the same space, the water is displaced, or moved upward. Note the new volume of the water with the object in it. 3. Subtract the volume of the water before you added the object from the volume of the water and the object together. The result is the volume of the object.

12 Density The relationship between the mass and the volume of a substance is another important physical property. Density is a measure of the amount of matter present in a given volume of a substance. Density= mass/volume or D=m/v

13 Calculating Density A glass marble has a volume of 5cm³ and a mass of 13g. What is the density of the glass marble?
