How does PATs feed into School Rating?
AERR Annual Education Result Report Fraser List
5
AERR The AERR indicates target were met and highlights the jurisdiction accomplishments for the year. AERRs provide jurisdictions and schools with an opportunity to celebrate their accomplishments, while reporting on their performance. The report demonstrates that the school board is accountable for results, and for the best use of resources to provide quality programs for students, while also addressing areas of improvement. Annual Education Results Reports are public documents meant to inform parents and the public.

Strategies for Parents to Support Student Stress during PATs

Test/PAT Stress and Anxiety
Our children naturally want to impress family members. Many worry about tests and PATs even if they do not talk about it openly. Threatening your child with statements such as “you better do well or else….” causes unnecessary stress and performance anxiety which can cause children to do worse on tests due to the effects of stress. A stressed out parent = a stressed out child Children are very attune to the emotional state of family members.
20
Effects of Stress on Learners:
Learning: Makes mistakes more often, forgets material/information easier, increased number of absent days, affects decision-making skills, decreased productivity. Physical: Frequent headaches, stomach aches, sick more often, harder for the body to fight off the common colds/illness.
21
Effects of Stress on Learners:
Social: Students tend to withdraw and isolate themselves from family and peers. Emotional: Increased rates of mental health related disorders including anxiety and depression; Difficulty regulating their mood; Irritability / outbursts they wouldn’t otherwise typically have. NO WONDER why this affects their academic and test performance!

What can we do? Leader in me - 7 Habits of Happy Kids
Be Proactive Begin With The End In Mind Put First Things First Think Win-Win Seek First To Understand, Then To Be Understood Synergize Balance is Best
23
Begin with the End in Mind
Have a study plan in place that helps them study little by little, rather than ‘cramming’ a week before. Remember not to make them ‘over study’. Put First Things First Help children to learn to prioritize. Allow them to have some say in their afterschool schedule when possible. Giving choices allows children to learn to manage their time better and can even reduce some of the resistance to doing homework or taking care of responsibilities.
24
Balance is best We all know that academics and religious studies are important. However, focusing only on learning and nothing else can be harmful for your child’s mental well-being. This can cause resentment and increased stress levels. Support your child to be academically and personally successful by allowing them to have ‘mental health’ breaks AND by giving them balance – this includes socially, emotionally, physically and for themselves. HOW?
25
Balance is Best Provide opportunities for your child in the following areas in order to support balance and optimal mental health for your child: Social: Continue to allow them to hang out with peers, engage in family events Emotional: Check-in with your child and see how they are doing: are they feeling stressed? Overwhelmed? Is the workload is too much? Are they feeling like they are getting balance in life? Or are they just doing homework, studying and memorizing? Physical: Provide opportunities for your child to be engaged in physical activities that are proven to reduce stress and improve over-all mental function such as: going to the gym, being involved in extra-curricular sports, getting outdoors. Be physically active by doing whatever interests the child (remember, what we enjoy as adults, our children don’t always enjoy – we are unique). Self-care: Allow time for your child to do things that THEY enjoy (things they WANT to do, not things they HAVE to do) on a daily basis.
