1 Language Arts Mathematics Social Studies Technology Visual Arts
Reading, writing, speaking, and listening are four components of the language arts program. Whenever possible, language arts activities will be integrated with other subjects. 1. Number Sense – place value, fractions, decimals, ratios, percent, integers, factors 2. Number Operations – addition, subtraction, multiplication, division 3. Patterns and Relations – using patterns to help solve mathematical problems/equations 4. Measurement – length, area, capacity, volume, mass, time, angles 5. Geometry – geometric figures, geometric drawings, properties, symmetry, transformations 6. Data Management – collecting, representing, and interpreting data, various types of graphs, mean, median, mode 7. Probability – predicting, experimenting, analyzing data * Mental math, problem solving, and estimating will be included regularly. The following topics will be focused on throughout the year: concept of culture and it’s role in their lives, cross cultural understanding, traditions in cultures, use of resources and sustainability practices, child rights issues, and responsibilities as global citizens. Speaking and Listening Class/small group discussions, literature circles, read aloud, oral presentations, asking/responding to questions, following directions. Technology Throughout the year, students will use the internet to research topics relating to various subjects. As well, students will be exposed to various programs such as PowerPoint and GNSPES via our school computers. Coding skills will also be practiced. Reading and Viewing Independent reading, shared reading, guided reading, graphic organizers, literature circles, reading responses/logs, novel study, poetry, readers theatre, reading records. Visual Arts Writing and Other Ways of Representing Text During our weekly art lessons, students will be given opportunities to learning about elements and properties of design. As well, students will be introduced to various artists of the past and present. Students will be encouraged to focus more on the process of making art rather than the final product. Journal writing, persuasive writing, problem- solution report, procedural writing, graphic novels, script writing, newspaper articles, using technology to create, revise, edit, and publish texts. Science Health There will be 4 topics of study: 1. Flight Space Diversity of Life Electricity All topics covered relate to one of the three areas: healthy self, healthy relationships, and healthy community.

Ed – Day 1 and Day 4 Assessment of student learning will be ongoing and methods used will include: observations (independent and group work, presentations, reading records), conversations (conferences), and products (class work, projects, teacher- made tests and quizzes). Clear expectations will be given prior to work/assignments through checklists and rubrics and will be used to evaluate students’ achievement.
