2 Native societies (1.1) Main idea- Changes in land affected agriculture, resources, and social structure

3 Corn Corn was spread from Mexico to the southwest
Geography affected where people could live and grow corn Corn needed to be grown near water sources, this affected geography because people moved to specific areas Corn encouraged people to settle in one area instead of moving around

4 Drought The Great Basin and Great Plains faced severe drought
The drought affected the ability to grow crops which affected where people could survive The drought forced people to live mobile lifestyles following the water

5 Mixed societies Agricultural societies and hunting societies mixed due to available resources This caused civilization to become more permanent In the northeast, societies along the Mississippi River and the Atlantic seaboard mixed forming permanent villages

6 Resources Different resources affected geography and where people could live The ocean provided resources necessary for people to survive A main resource during this time was fish

7 Spanish Empire (1.2) Main idea- The columbian exchange and Spanish empire caused changes in geography

8 Demographic changes Columbian exchange brought new things like epidemics, crops, and animals Smallpox, horses, oxen, rice, wheat With new resources from columbian exchange, people could move to new areas which affected geography

9 Plantation based agriculture
Spanish created the encomienda system to control native Americans Helped with work on sugar plantations and work in silver mines Depending on where the resources were in the land, determined where the Native slave laborers were forced to work and live

10 Slavery Spanish imported African slaves to the US
Slaves were forced into labor in plantation agriculture and mining Slavery brought more people to plantation areas

11 Caste system The lower people in the castes were the workers of the land Whereas the higher people were just gaining the benefits from their work
