2 Do-Now- Respond in writing the following scenario…
You DECIDE to attend a house party Saturday night because it is at your best friend’s house and he/she asked you to be there You DECIDE that you are not going to drink at the party You are having a good time at the party, and then your friends start bugging you to “let loose” and have a drink… What is your thought process for your response… How do your GOALS fit into the thought process

3 Use Assertive Behavior
Honest expression of thoughts and feelings without experiencing anxiety or threatening others. Cool, Calm, Collected, BUT you get your point across

4 Use the word “NO” Clearly state the word, “NO” and make eye contact when refusing Avoid saying “No, THANK YOU.” There is no need to THANK anyone for offering you something that could be harmful to your health

5 Use Nonverbal Behavior That Matches Your Verbal Behavior
Body language and/or actions to express feelings, ideas, and opinions. Say NO with your body language and your word!

6 Influence Others to Choose Responsible Behavior
If dangerous situation, REMOVE YOURSELF Suggest alternative, responsible ways to behave Be a positive role model!

7 Avoid Situations Where Pressure May Become a Problem
Don’t put yourself in a situation where you may be tempted or pressured into making unhealthy decisions

8 Avoid People who Make Harmful Decisions
“Guilty by association” The people that you hang out with has an impact on your reputation Associate with people who have the qualities and characteristics you want people to recognize in you!

9 Resist Pressure to Engage in Illegal Behavior
Protect others Follow the laws of your community Demonstrate good character

10 Refuse It! FAST FORWARD 4 Years- You are a senior with a younger sibling, cousin, or friend who is a freshmen… Write a letter to the freshmen with advice on how to deal with situations that may require the use of refusal skills and decision making… Be sure to include the refusal skill techniques covered in class today!
