1 Physical and Chemical Changes & Properties

2 Properties & Changes in Matter…
Properties can be grouped into 2 general types: physical properties and chemical properties. Properties can be defined as characteristics that a substance exhibits. They can be used to describe and classify matter.

3 Physical Properties & Changes
A physical property can be observed or measured without changing the identity of the substance. EX} Melting Point Boiling Point

4 Physical Changes Physical changes do not change a substances true identity. It only alters the appearance. Examples: State Changes

5 State Changes…

6 Intensive & Extensive Properties
Properties of matter can be compared to finger prints. They can help us reveal the identity of an unknown substance. Properties can be further classified as either intensive or extensive.

7 Extensive Properties Extensive properties will change depending on the amount of matter that is present. Examples: Mass & Volume

8 Intensive Properties Intensive properties will stay the same regardless of the amount of matter present. Examples: melting point, boiling point, density, & ability to conduct electricity and heat

9 Chemical Properties and Chemical Changes…
A chemical property relates to a substance’s ability to undergo changes that transform it into different substances. This can only be observed through experimentation. EX) The ability of Iron being able to rust from combining with the Oxygen in our air.

10 In Chemical change or chemical reaction brand new substances are formed.
Ex) Remember the Iron and rust. A chemical reaction occurred between Oxygen and Iron. This reaction created a new product; the rust!

11 Indicators of a chemical change
Color change Formation of a gas Temperature change Formation of a precipitate Emission of light Cooking/baking/frying
