Matter Unit 1: All That Glitters is Not Gold

What is Matter? Amount of stuff that is in an object Anything that has mass and takes up space Made up of atoms and molecules This is why things take up space 3 common states of matter: 1. solid 2. liquid 3. gas

What properties are used to describe matter? Physical property: something about matter (object) that can be observed or measured Ex: color, state of matter, melting point, boiling point, mass, volume, density, etc. Chemical property: may only be observed if you change the chemical identity of an object Ex: Iron is able to form rust when it combines with oxygen. Ability to rust is a chemical property of iron.

What are physical changes? When a substance changes state of matter, but it does not change chemically The state of matter changes, but the substance is still the same Ex: water freezing into ice Cutting a piece of wood into smaller pieces Tearing up a piece of paper

What are chemical changes? When a substance changes into something new This occurs due to heating, chemical reaction, etc. You can tell a chemical changes has occurred if the density, melting point, or freezing point of the original substance changes Most of the time, a chemical change can be seen PRECIPITATE may form: solid that forms and settles out of a liquid

Hold Up… Wait a Minute… Questions to think about: Is it possible to understand something that we cannot see? What kind of perspective (point of view) can give you an in depth understanding of matter?

Which can tell us the most about water? Macroscopic Model: what it looks like in real life

Which can tell us the most about water? Symbolic Model: uses symbols (letters and numbers)

Which can tell us the most about water? Particulate Model: shows particles as circles

What representation of matter is this: macro, symbolic, or particulate?
