Wireless Connectivity at Pace University Wireless Connectivity is: Available at every Pace location Note: In NY 55 John St. & St. George have wireless service through an outside vendor. A network of convenience and is an alternative to wired network access Connected to Paces network Slower than wired connections (i.e., Dorm Rooms, Labs, Library, etc.) Note: Use wired connections when doing high bandwidth tasks. Secured using your Pace credentials (Portal Userid & Password)

Wireless Connectivity at Pace University Wireless Connectivity: Is not a primary means to connect to the internet Is not a recommended for real-time gaming applications Is not a recommended method for transferring large files peer-to-peer Is not a primary means to connect to the Pace Network

How to Connect Turn on your laptop or mobile device, check your settings for available wireless networks: Pace_Connect Use this the first time you connect with a Windows laptop Follow on screen prompts - it will automatically configure the wireless for you. (Supports only the Windows built-in wireless client.) Apple devices (Macs, iPads, iPhone) do not need to use Pace Connect After the initial setup you no longer need to connect to Pace_Connect - connect directly to Pace_Secure Pace_Secure Use this if using an Apple Device and after you have setup your Windows laptop using Pace_Connect (Regular day-to-day usage.)

Common Misconceptions about Wireless If you cant connect to a wireless network you cant connect at all. FALSE: There are wired ports in every dorm and throughout public areas. Pointing an antenna on an access point towards your PC gives you better signal. FALSE: Wireless antennas are omni directional. Installing your own access point helps the University and your dorm. FALSE: Installing an access point, such as Linksys, interferes with Paces wireless network and degrades performance for all.

Common Misconceptions about Wireless I shouldnt have to enter in my credentials all the time. TRUE/FALSE: Pace uses controller based wireless technology. Certain access points connect to certain controllers. If you move from one area to another you may have to authenticate again. This is dependent on how your local wireless profile is setup and which controller your session goes back to.

Common Misconceptions about Wireless Wireless connections are the best choice for real time applications. FALSE, Wireless is a half-duplex media. Meaning you can only send or receive data at one time. Also wireless is susceptible to RF interference causing signal loss. 802.11N states that I should get 54Mbps, why is my connection so slow? Wireless is a shared media. Meaning the more devices that connect the smaller the slice of bandwidth that is to give to each user.

In this example 4 PCs, 3 Laptops and three printers are connected to one access point. These devices all share the 54Mbps bandwidth. Common Misconceptions about Wireless

Basic Troubleshooting Make sure you are connecting to Pace_Secure Dont use Pace_Connect as your primary method of connecting to Pace_Secure Turn wireless radio off/on Move closer to an access point Contact the ITS Help Desk or visit a Computer Resource Center to verify your wireless settings are correct Check with ITS for a work around for the known bug in the Mac OS 10.7.x related to wireless networking

Questions? Verify your Windows wireless settings are correct yourself: EAP Methods: PEAP with MSCHAPv2 Encryption: AES Key Management: CCMP Certificate Details: Entrust.net Certification Authority (2048) and Entrust.net Secure Server Certification Authority Turn wireless off, on your mobile devices.
