3 Magna Carta King John (England) was hated by the majority of England.
Pope Innocent III excommunicated him from the church, and forbid any Priest to hold Mass in England. King John also spent ridiculous amounts of money on wars with the French, most of which England lost. Outrageous taxes on the people. Barons (Nobles, Wealthy) in England began to question “Divine Right” of King John. Decided to try to take away almost ALL of the King’s power. 1215, King John had to sign the Magna Carta, which gave the Barons more rights in England Led to war

4 Magna Carta Magna Carta is famous today because of it’s survival
Similar documents were created in Germany, Sicily, and France in the 13th and 14th centuries, but they have not survived. Echoed in the United States Bill of Rights 3 of its 63 original clauses still exist in England today Habeas Corpus “No free man shall be seized or imprisoned, or stripped of his rights or possessions…except by the lawful judgment of his equals…or by law of the land.” Main legacy Established the principle that the law was a power in its own right. Even the King, like his people, must follow these laws. Symbolizes justice, fairness, and human rights. Laws were important in the colonization of America, England's legal system was used as a model for many colonies.

“Divine Right” People did not question the King’s rule Oliver Cromwell Member of Parliament Represented the people! Fought back against King Charles I in 1649 King Charles I beheaded in 1649 for not doing the best for his people Cromwell then ruled England as “Protector”, not “King” Devoted himself to helping England’s economy and the people of England However, after Cromwell’s death, King James II took control of England England was back to the Monarchy system  King James II took away the people’s rights (again) English Parliament forced King James II off of the throne Invited William and Mary from the Netherlands to rule England Catch: William and Mary had to sign the English Bill of Rights
