3. The 16 mark evaluative (how far do you agree?) Questions
The 16 mark ‘evaluative’ question from the wider world depth studies in Paper 1 Section B asks students to evaluate how far they agree with a statement.
They should use their knowledge and understanding of the statement to explain the argument which agrees, then the must explain the argument that disagrees (counter-argument) before reaching a sustained judgement on the statement.
e.g. ‘The Nazi-Soviet Pact was the main reason for the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939.’
How far do you agree with this statement? Explain your answer. (16 marks)
Students will need to explain the main reason given for the outbreak of the Second World War in order to evaluate how far they agree with the statement. They will also need to identify and explain other factors that also led to the outbreak of the Second World War. This question enables them to bring their knowledge and understanding of the causes of the Second World War to reach a judgement about which was the ‘main reason’.
