5 Are birds more closely related to mammals or reptiles?

6 How do we know? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j5KjCn7B6mU reptiles!
Pose the question "How do we know?" to evaluate students' prior knowledge to the topic. How do we know?

7 Making Predictions On your dry erase boards, you are going to work with your group to make predictions about pictures I show you. Write a 2-3 sentence summary to explain the pictures. Use EVIDENCE in the pictures to form your response Think like a scientists!

8 Predict why these animals have such similar structures.

9 Predict why a whale would have a femur and pelvis but no hips.

10 Predict why these embryos look so similar and why the human and bird have gill slits

11 Predict why the chromosome for a human and a mouse look so similar

12 Summarize your conclusions from analyzing these pictures.
2-3 sentences

13 Evolution Defined…. Evolution is defined as change over time
More specifically… Genetic change over time

14 Misconceptions Misconception 1: There is no evidence for evolution
Why is this a misconception? Misconception 2: Evolution creates perfect organisms

15 What evidence do we have for evolution?

16 Where’s the Evidence? Fossils Homologous Structures
Comparative Embryology DNA Vestigial Structures

17 Fossils Fossils show the existence of many different organisms through time that are related to existing organisms.

18 Homologous Structures
Homologous structures show similarities in structures that suggests a common ancestor

19 Comparative Embryology
The similarities in the early stages of development of vertebrates suggest these things could be distantly related

20 DNA We can collect quantitative data that proves relatedness between all living organisms today through similarities in DNA

21 Vestigial Structures Finding structures with no function in animals shows that their ancestors had a different body that needed that structure
