3 By the end of a school year...
“Student A” will have read the equivalent of 60 whole school days. “Student B” will have read only 12 school days. Which student would you expect to have the better vocabulary? Which would you expect to be more successful?

5 So, reading has some pretty powerful effects. But so does NOT reading.

6 months to a year below their earlier performance if they don’t continue reading during the summer. (American Library Association)

10 But, we’re in luck! The easiest one: summer reading!
low-cost options exist to fight the “Summer slide.” The easiest one: summer reading! if students read 8 books [20 articles] that match their reading ability and areas of interest over the summer, they can achieve growth similar to students who attended summer school.

13 SUMMER READING **Every student must have his own copy of the novel.
Over the summer, students are expected to read the assigned novel for their grade level. Upon returning to school, students will be given a summative comprehension test on the novel. Additionally, our first nine weeks’ lessons will come from characters, themes, and events from the novel. SUMMER READING DYSTOPIAN FICTION 7th grade: Veronica Roth’s, Divergent 8th grade: Neal Shusterman’s, Unwind POSSIBLE THEMES FOR BOTH NOVELS: **Every student must have his own copy of the novel. standing up for what’s right when others won’t ~ finding value and worth in all individuals ~ fostering leadership qualities for the benefit of mankind ~ overcoming obstacles in tough circumstances If you would like to pay $10.00 for your novel tonight, we will purchase the book for your child and make sure he has the novel before leaving for summer break.
