How did the United States expand and become more “Imperialistic” as a result of the Spanish American War? Describe how the following helped to set the stage for war between Spain and America: - Display of US power * Forced Chile to pay money to sailors families * Sent ship to Brazil to settle a rebellion * Forced Britain to accept arbitration on a border dispute with Venezuela

- The Cuban Revolution – Rebels seeking help started attacking US business interests to draw in US govt. help (President is reluctant to help) - Yellow Journalism – Sensational news stories by competing newspapers about situation in Cuba sways American’s opinion Jingoism: Intense burst of national pride and desire for aggressive foreign policy

6 “A Splendid Little War”
Surprise attack on Spanish fleet in Manila Bay destroys Spanish fleet in 7 hours 2) US warship bottle up Spanish fleet in Santiago Bay in Cuba (all ships destroyed trying to run) 3) On land American soldiers and volunteers defeat the Spanish at a cost of 400 battle casualties (2,100 die due to disease, food poisoning and inadequate medical care)

8 Treaty of Paris: (1898) granted Cuba independence, US gained Philippines, Puerto Rico, and Guam for $20 million. U.S. gained many former Spanish colonies, sets off debate among imperialists and anti-imperialists in Asia and Latin America Platt Amendment Cuba was not to enter into any agreements with foreign powers that would endanger its independence. The U.S. could intervene in Cuban affairs if necessary to maintain an efficient, independent govt. Cuba must lease Guantanamo Bay to the U.S. for naval and coaling station.

9 Challenges after the war – Describe the challenges face by the US in each of the following:
- Dilemma in the Philippines – Filipinos want independence, US unwillingness starts war (thousands killed, many more put in camps) - The Fate of Cuba – Military govt left in Cuba to protect business interest. (Platt Amendment) US leaves but retains control - Puerto Rico – US grants US citizenship and independence. Allows elections of legislature, but US govt picks the executive (governor)
