Physical & Chemical Properties
2
I definitely only spend a short time completing this activity.
3
How were you able to describe the object inside the paper bag if you didn’t know what it was?
You probably used things such as: Size Shape Sound Mass Length Odor These are all examples of physical properties.
4
Can be observed or measured without changing it into another substance
Physical Properties Can be observed or measured without changing it into another substance Are observed when using one or more of your 5 senses: touching, seeing, smelling, tasting, and hearing This is an actual tattoo, can you believe that?
5
Let’s Take a Closer Look at Physical Properties
Some physical properties include things you are already familiar with: Color Odor Shape State (solid, liquid, gas, plasma) Density (mass per unit of volume) There are other physical properties that are new to you & we will take a closer look at them. Luster Malleability Ductility Solubility Conductivity Hardness
6
Luster Luster is how shiny a substance is.
Some examples include: glass, diamonds, & metals
7
Malleability is the ability to be hammered or rolled into flat sheets.
8
Ductility is the ability of a substance to be drawn into thin wires.
9
Solubility is the ability of a substance to dissolve in a liquid.
10
Conductivity Conductivity is the ability to pass electricity or heat through a substance.
11
Hardness is a resistance to being scratched or dented.
12
Use physical properties to determine who I am…
13
Choose a student to select one of the characters above
Choose a student to select one of the characters above. Do not have him/her tell anyone which character he/she chose. Let the other students ask “Yes” or “No” questions to try to figure out which character the first student selected. You can continue to let students play in small groups, but they will be weary after just a few rounds. Explain that they used PHYSICAL PROPERTIES to determine the characters chosen by each other.
14
list as many physical properties as you can about our classroom…
Take 60 seconds and list as many physical properties as you can about our classroom… Students may list: shape, color, texture, height, width, odor, sounds, … Have a quick class discussion about what properties they listed on their notebook paper.
15
The rest of you can only respond with YES or NO!!!
“20 Questions” A volunteer is going to come up to the front of the room & try to determine the identity of an object by asking questions about that object. The rest of you can only respond with YES or NO!!! If the volunteer can identify the object after asking 20 (or fewer) questions, they will get a piece of candy – so don’t give them any hints! Volunteers – you will want to ask questions about the physical properties of the object. For this activity, I usually take in cards from the “Headbanz” game, but you can just go to Google & print off any pictures you would like. I have one volunteer at a time hold a card in front of his/her forehead so everyone else can see & then he/she asks questions to determine what is on his/her card. For middle school students I use “silly” cards such as diaper, boxer shorts, deodorant, etc. *I only spend about 5 minutes on this activity & then move on. The kids LOVE this!*
16
Let’s Play “I Spy” – Physical Property Style
You will play “I Spy” with the people at your table. Directions: 1) One person “spies” an object in the room and describes it using only its physical properties. 2) The other people at the table try to guess what the object is. 3) Compete with each other to see who can keep the table guessing the longest.
17
“What’s In The Bag?!” Materials: brown paper bags filled with common objects Directions: The class will be divided into 2 equal teams. A volunteer from team A will select 1 bag and go out of the room to look at its contents. When the student returns, he/she will describe the properties of the object to his/her teammates. YOU CANNOT TREAT THE USE OF THE OBJECT AS A CLUE! The team will have 2 minutes in which to earn 1 point by correctly naming the object. Team B will go next and do the same thing. We will alternate until all the bags have been used. The winning team will receive a homework pass. Examples of objects you can place in the bags are fruit, eating utensil, writing implement, piece of clothing, small flashlight, nail, or other items of your choosing

Physical Properties of a Cookie
Observe & list as many different physical properties as you can about your cookie. You CANNOT take your cookie out of the bag and you cannot change it or the bag in any way! When you are finished, wait for further instructions. Ahead of time, buy Chips Ahoy cookies & put them into Ziploc bags. Give each student a bag with a cookie in it. Have the students list as many physical properties as they can about their cookie. Once you’ve given them enough time to do this, have them switch their notebook paper with someone sitting near them. Mix the cookies together at each table. Each student needs to find the cookie for the person whose paper they received – based only on the physical properties listed. They cannot receive help from the other student.

Chemical Properties Describe a substance based on the ability to change into a new substance with different properties. A chemical property can only be observed by actually changing the identity of the substance. Example: A piece of paper burns and turns into ash. The chemical property of the paper is that it is flammable.
20
Chemical Properties Flammability: The ability to catch on fire
Oxidation: The ability to react with oxygen Toxicity: The ability to be poisonous Sensitivity to Light: The ability to change when exposed to light Reactivity with water: The ability to react with water
21
Many objects have BOTH physical & chemical properties
Take a moment to list as many physical AND chemical properties of an apple as you can Chemical Properties oxidation – can react with oxygen & turn brown Physical Properties red/green shiny round smooth Give the students a minute or 2 to list as many physical & chemical properties as they can. Have the students share their answers with the class.
22
What are the physical & chemical properties of paper?
