Opposite of “subsistence” farming

4. Transportation in the South
Southern colonies were connected by many rivers
Boats are major source of transportation
Quicker and cheaper than going by land
i.e. horse and wagon
Plantations were usually built on rivers, reducing the need for cities with harbors
Sailboats carried cargo throughout the Southern colonies

5. Comparing North and South
Based on these notes and your reading of Sections 2 and 3, complete the chart comparing the Northern and Southern colonies.
