I’m not saving any more seats for you on the bus. For all I care you can stand the whole way to school (Message 2, p. 260).
Richard believes that good friends look out and do favors for each other while ex friends do the opposite–don’t look out and withhold favors. In this moment, he reminds Janet of his favor of a saved seat on the bus when they were good friends, and now that they are no longer friends, he doesn’t care if she has to stand. The moment relates to a theme of “friendships have rewards and responsibilities.”
