3 2.04 Understand the functions and disorders of the lymphatic system
What are the functions of the lymphatic system? Fluid Balance - Homeostasis Lymphocyte Production Filtration Immunity 2.04 Understand the functions and disorders of the lymphatic system 3

4 2.04 Understand the functions and disorders of the lymphatic system
Fluid balance Helps to keep the body healthy by keeping the fluid balanced between the vascular system and the cellular system. ____Fluid IN ____Fluid OUT 2.04 Understand the functions and disorders of the lymphatic system 4

5 Lymphocyte production
The Lymphatic System Lymphocyte production What are lymphocytes? White Blood Cells What do they do? Help to form antibodies at the site of inflammation, protects against cancer. What is their relevance to health? They help protect the body from sickness 5

6 2.04 Understand the functions and disorders of the lymphatic system
Filtration What does a filter do? They remove contaminants How do filters relate to the lymphatic system? They get rid of toxins 2.04 Understand the functions and disorders of the lymphatic system 6

7 2.04 Understand the functions and disorders of the lymphatic system
Use Immunity Notes Handout 2.04 Understand the functions and disorders of the lymphatic system 7

8 Immunity The Lymphatic System
Immunity is the body’s way of fighting infection and protecting itself. Sneezing clears the nose of bacteria and germs that can cause sickness 8

9 2.04 Understand the functions and disorders of the lymphatic system
Natural immunity: is what a person is born with to help fight bacteria and viruses. Includes: Intact skin Tears Mucous Membranes Inflammation Phagocytes (type of WBC) 2.04 Understand the functions and disorders of the lymphatic system 9

10 2.04 Understand the functions and disorders of the lymphatic system
Natural immunity What are the body’s natural immune processes shown in these pictures? Tears Break in skin Phagocytes 2.04 Understand the functions and disorders of the lymphatic system 10

11 2.04 Understand the functions and disorders of the lymphatic system
Acquired immunity: Two Types: Passive Active 2.04 Understand the functions and disorders of the lymphatic system 11

12 2.04 Understand the functions and disorders of the lymphatic system
Acquired immunity: Passive: It is borrowed immunity from another person or animal, their antibodies only last 3-5 weeks Also come from mother when child is born again only temporary 2.04 Understand the functions and disorders of the lymphatic system 12

13 2.04 Understand the functions and disorders of the lymphatic system
Acquired immunity: Active Two types: Natural Artificial 2.04 Understand the functions and disorders of the lymphatic system 13

14 2.04 Understand the functions and disorders of the lymphatic system
Acquired immunity: Active Natural: you got the disease, and recovered making your own antibodies 2.04 Understand the functions and disorders of the lymphatic system 14

15 The Lymphatic System Acquired Active Natural Immunity:
What is the relevance to health? Long term, permanent immunity. You created your own antibodies, they stay with you for life. 15

16 2.04 Understand the functions and disorders of the lymphatic system
Acquired immunity: Active Two Types of Artificial: Immunization Immunoglobulins 2.04 Understand the functions and disorders of the lymphatic system 16

17 2.04 Understand the functions and disorders of the lymphatic system
Acquired immunity: Active Artificial Immunization: comes from getting a shot (vaccine) not from getting the disease 2.04 Understand the functions and disorders of the lymphatic system 17

18 2.04 Understand the functions and disorders of the lymphatic system
Acquired immunity Active Artificial Should immunizations be required? Why or why not? 2.04 Understand the functions and disorders of the lymphatic system 18

19 2.04 Understand the functions and disorders of the lymphatic system
Acquired immunity: Active Artificial Immunoglobulins: Proteins in plasma (remember) that act as an antibody (given a shot or transfusion) 2.04 Understand the functions and disorders of the lymphatic system 19

20 The Lymphatic System REVIEW
What are the functions of the lymphatic system? 1 2 3 4 How are these functions relevant to health? 2.04 Understand the functions and disorders of the lymphatic system 20
