1 Simple, Compound, and Complex Sentences

2 Simple Sentences A simple sentence contains one independent clause and no dependent clauses. Ex. Malika sings. Ex. Ben competes at chess every afternoon.

3 Compound Sentences A compound sentence contains two or more independent clauses and no dependent clauses. Independent clauses are joined by: A comma and a conjunction (FANBOYS) A semicolon (;) Ex. Malika sings every day, and she practices with the choir. Ex. Malika sings every day; she also practices with the choir.

5 Complex Sentences A complex sentence contains one independent clause and one or more dependent clauses Young people love the way he tells stories because he changes his voice and wears costumes. Mr. Hernandez, who is a professional storyteller, performs at many festivals. Because the weather was bad, Devon canceled the climb.
