1 Coordination and Subordination
Two methods for combining sentences

2 Coordination (Compound Sentence)
Two clauses that are equally important. They must be closely related to each other. Three of the same methods for fixing Comma splices and Run-ons. Ex. It was raining. We canceled the picnic. These are two independent clauses.

3 Add a comma and a coordinating conjunctions (FANBOYS)
Example: It was raining, so we canceled the picnic.

4 Example: It was raining; we canceled the picnic.
Use a Semicolon Example: It was raining; we canceled the picnic.

5 Use a semicolon, a conjunctive adverb, and a comma
Remember: we know conjunctive adverbs as transitions (HOTSHOT CAT)

6 Example: It was raining ;therefore, we canceled the picnic.
;HOTSHOT CAT, Example: It was raining ;therefore, we canceled the picnic.

7 ;HOTSHOT CAT, Hint: You must include all of the punctuation.
Hint: Choose a transition that fits the sentence.

8 Subordination Complex Sentence
One clause is less important to the main clause. The subordinating clause is a dependent clause and it is attached to the independent clause. Hint: Look for subordinating conjunctions

9 Subordination Example: Since it was raining, we canceled the picnic.
Remember that a subordinating conjunction still joins ideas. (just like regular conjunctions) If the dependent clause begins the sentence then, you will need a comma.

10 Pay attention to where the subordinating conjunction is placed.
Example: We canceled the picnic since it was raining. Notice, since the subordinating conjunction is joining ideas, a comma is not needed.

11 Subordination and Coordination
Example: Although it was raining, we did not cancel the picnic; consequently, we had a carpet picnic in the family room.
